How to Fix a Leaky Toilet in Just a Few Easy Steps

A leaky toilet can be a frustrating experience, but fortunately, it can also make for one of the easiest DIY repairs today. With just a few simple steps, you could have your leaky toilet completely under control.

Step 1: Shut Off the Water Supply Valve

This valve is typically located right next to the pipe that leads up to your toilet’s tank. Simply turn it off. In case it’s corroded or it won’t shut off for some reason, it’s best to call a plumber to help replace that valve, so should it happen again in the future, you can fix a leaky toilet. Once you’ve shut it off, flush the toilet to drain all of the water out of it.

Step 2: Pull the Toilet off the Drain

The next step is to loosen the bolts that hold the toilet on so you can take the toilet off. Just grab a pair of pliers, remove the caps that go over the bolts, and twist them until they’re loose. Then grab the toilet and pull it off the drain.

Step 3: Clean Up

You’ll want to put a rag in the sewer pipe to keep those gases from escaping into the house. From there, it’s important to do a bit of cleaning around that pipe. Scrape up the old wax and debris, and take a closer look at the flange.

Step 4: Determine the Problem

At this point, it’s time to decide why your toilet is leaking. It could be that the flange is broken. Perhaps it’s set too far into the pipe. It might even be that you have some rot around the flange itself. Either way, you’ll want to replace it, then replace the wax seal that goes around your toilet.

Step 5: Reverse Order

Once you’ve fixed the flange and set the new wax ring, your next step is to put everything back together again, because you’ve likely fixed your leaking toilet!
