You turn the shower on, hop in, expecting a wonderful cascade of hot water to wash over you, then suddenly you have more water at your feet than you can imagine. Dripping wet, you have to hop out of the bathtub, dry off and decide what to do next. There are few things more frustrating than a clogged shower drain, but this problem isn’t as uncommon as you might imagine. Fortunately, it’s usually fairly easy to fix. Follow these steps on how to unclog shower drain, and you should be ready for your next hot shower.
Step 1: Remove the Drain Cover
Depending on the type of drain cover you have in your shower, you’ll likely need a screwdriver for this step, but it’s the only way to make sure you get rid of that clog. Just unscrew the drain cover, take it off, and lay the cover and the screw aside (but make sure to stash them in a spot where you can find them again).
Step 2: Clear the Gunk
Drains tend to build up a lot of gunk at the openings. It’s probably not what’s causing the actual clog, but to get to the clog, you’re going to have to get rid of it. For this step, you’ll probably want to wear a pair of gloves because it can be a bit slimy. Using your fingers, sweep the opening of the drain clear of any gunk you can find.
Step 3: Create a Volcano
Remember in elementary school science when you combined baking soda and vinegar to create a volcano? This follows the same basic idea. Mix 1/3 cup of baking soda with 1/3 cup of vinegar. As soon as it begins to fizz, pour it down your drain. The reaction between the two should clean things out a bit. Let it sit for twenty minutes, then pour hot water down the drain once more to help flush it out.
