So you’re working to finish up the last of the dishes when suddenly you notice the garbage disposal not working properly. You could actually have a number of problems on your hands and may need a plumber or garbage disposal repair service, but here’s a quick overview of what you might be experiencing.
If your garbage disposal won’t do anything. It’s not humming or making any type of sound , chances are good that you’re not getting the power you should be. See if you can find the reset button that’s on the bottom of the disposal and press it. That may fix it immediately. If it doesn’t, you’ll want to unplug it and test the outlet to make certain it’s getting power. If the outlet works, but the garbage disposal doesn’t, the answer to your question of how to fix the garbage disposal is quite simple, you’ll need to replace it.
If the motor is humming but the disposal won’t grind or is constantly stopping, it’s most likely because you have a jam. Unplug the garbage disposal, then try to free the impeller (on the bottom of the disposal) with a hex wrench. If that doesn’t work, use pliers to pull any material that’s currently in there out of the disposal. In some cases, you may have to remove the unit to clear the jam.
If you have standing water, you may not have a disposal problem but a drain problem. You’ll want to contact a plumber immediately to help clear the clog and make certain that it doesn’t happen again.
